About the Job
The Health & Human Services Agency is looking for a caring and understanding person to join our team as a Substance Use Counselor. In this job, you will help people who are struggling with addiction, guiding them toward a healthier life. You’ll be a support system for those who need it most, helping them understand their challenges and develop new skills to overcome addiction.
Job Summary
As a Substance Use Counselor, you will work closely with people who want to stop using drugs or alcohol. Your job is to listen to their stories, understand their struggles, and help them find ways to cope. You will provide them with tools and support to stay strong and healthy. This role is important because it helps people make positive changes in their lives.
What You Will Do
Counseling and Support
- One-on-One Sessions: Spend time talking to each person individually. Listen to their problems, give advice, and help them feel understood.
- Group Support: Lead group sessions where people can share their experiences and support each other.
- Family Guidance: Meet with family members to help them understand addiction and how they can support their loved one’s journey.
Making Treatment Plans
- Assessment: Find out what each person needs by asking questions and listening carefully.
- Personalized Plans: Create a plan to help each person based on their specific needs and goals.
- Follow-Up: Check on each person regularly to see how they are doing and adjust the plan if needed.
Teaching New Skills
- Coping Skills: Teach people ways to handle stress, avoid triggers, and make healthy choices.
- Building Support: Help each person find friends or groups who can support them outside of counseling.
Working with Other Services
- Teamwork: Work with other counselors and health professionals to give the best care possible.
- Community Resources: Connect people with other support services in the community, like job programs or housing assistance.
What You Need
Required Skills
- Kindness and Understanding: You should be patient and care about helping others.
- Listening Skills: You need to listen closely to what people say to understand them better.
- Clear Communication: Be able to explain things simply so everyone understands.
- Problem Solving: Find good ways to help people face their challenges.
- Respect Privacy: Keep everything that clients share private and safe.
Helpful Skills
- Knowledge About Addiction: It helps if you know different ways to help people recover from addiction.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Understand that people come from different backgrounds, and be respectful of their beliefs.
- Handling Stressful Moments: Be able to stay calm when things get intense and help people feel safe.
Education and Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree: You need at least a bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, or a similar field.
Experience
- Counseling Experience: It’s helpful if you have experience working in addiction counseling or social work.
- Certification: If you have a certification in substance abuse counseling, that’s a big plus.
