The Health & Human Services Agency helps people in our community, especially those who need support. We’re looking for someone who wants to help stop domestic violence and make people’s lives better. As a Domestic Violence Prevention Specialist, you’ll have the chance to help people who are in dangerous situations and teach others how to stop domestic violence before it starts.

Job Summary
As a Domestic Violence Prevention Specialist, your job will be to help prevent domestic violence and help people who are going through difficult times. Domestic violence is when one person in a relationship hurts or threatens the other person. You’ll work with families and individuals to make sure they are safe, and you’ll teach the community how to prevent domestic violence.
You will also work with other organizations, law enforcement, and local groups to make sure that everyone knows how to recognize and stop domestic violence. You’ll help give people the tools and support they need to stay safe.
Responsibilities
Your job will include a lot of important tasks. Here’s what you will do:
Teach and Educate:
- Help teach people in schools, community centers, and other groups about domestic violence.
- Explain to people how to recognize when someone might be in danger, and what they can do to help.
- Organize events like workshops or talks to teach people about domestic violence.
Help People Who Are in Danger:
- Talk to people who are hurt by domestic violence and help them find safe places to stay, get legal help, or talk to someone who can help.
- Offer emotional support and help victims make plans to stay safe.
- Let people know what their rights are and how they can protect themselves.
Work with Other Groups:
- Work with law enforcement (police) and other organizations that help victims of domestic violence.
- Attend meetings with local groups to help stop domestic violence and find better ways to protect people.
- Work together with other people and groups to help the community.
Collect Information and Reports:
- Keep records of people you help, what they need, and the services they receive.
- Prepare reports for your boss and other people who want to know how well the programs are working.
- Look at the information you collect to see if there are any patterns or ways to improve how we help victims of domestic violence.
Be a Good Team Player:
- Work with other community groups, schools, and law enforcement to make sure everyone is working together to prevent domestic violence.
- Attend meetings and share ideas with others to improve the way we help victims.
By doing all of these things, you will help make our community a safer place for everyone, and you will help people who need it the most.
Qualifications
To be a good fit for this job, here are some of the things we are looking for:
Required Skills:
- Good Communication: You need to be able to talk to people clearly, listen carefully, and explain things in a way that’s easy for everyone to understand.
- Empathy and Compassion: You must care about other people and understand that domestic violence can be very scary and hard to talk about.
- Problem-Solving: You need to be good at thinking of solutions to problems and helping people find ways to stay safe.
- Organization: You should be able to keep track of a lot of different tasks and make sure everything is done on time.
- Teamwork: You will work with other people, like police officers, teachers, and social workers, so you need to be good at working with others.
- Cultural Awareness: It’s important to understand that different people have different backgrounds, and their experiences with domestic violence may be different. You should respect these differences and help everyone who needs it.
Preferred Skills:
- Bilingual: If you speak more than one language, especially Spanish, it’s very helpful because you’ll be able to help more people.
- Crisis Management: If you’ve worked in a situation where you needed to help someone in an emergency, that’s great!
- Public Speaking: If you’re comfortable talking in front of a group or giving presentations, that will be helpful for teaching others.
- Outreach Experience: If you’ve worked with a community group or helped people in need before, that’s a plus.
Education and Experience
Education:
- You need to have a high school diploma or something similar (like a GED). But if you have a college degree in a field like Social Work, Psychology, or Sociology, that’s even better!
Experience:
- It’s helpful to have 1-2 years of experience helping people who are in difficult situations, especially with domestic violence or other community support work.
- If you’ve worked in a social service job, or if you’ve helped people in crisis before, that’s great experience for this role.
- You don’t need to have a lot of experience if you’re passionate about helping people and ready to learn!
Location
This job is located in San Diego County, California. San Diego is a great place to live with lots of things to do. Whether you like going to the beach, visiting museums, or enjoying the outdoors, you’ll find plenty of activities. It’s a large and diverse community where you can really make a difference.
