Public Health Policy Advisor Full Time

Job Summary

In this job, you will help create and improve policies that affect public health in San Diego County. A policy is a rule or a plan that helps make decisions about how things should work. Your job will be to look at the health of our community, figure out what needs to be improved, and then recommend new policies to make people healthier.

You will work with other people, like government leaders and doctors, to find ways to solve health problems. You will also be responsible for tracking how well these policies work and making sure that everyone in the community has the chance to live a healthy life.

Responsibilities

As a Public Health Policy Advisor, you will have several important tasks:

1. Researching and Creating Policies

• Look at health data and reports to understand the health issues in San Diego County.
• Help create new rules and guidelines (called policies) to improve people’s health.
• Make changes to old policies if they are not working well.
• Make sure the policies you help create are based on facts and the latest health research.

2. Giving Advice to Leaders

• Work with government leaders and health experts to help them make good decisions about health policies.
• Share your ideas on how to make health programs better for people in the community.
• Help decision-makers understand which health programs will work best for different groups of people.

3. Working with the Community

• Talk to people in the community to understand their health needs.
• Work with health organizations, schools, and other groups to make sure everyone’s health needs are being met.
• Attend meetings with community groups to listen to their opinions and share information about new health policies.

4. Communicating and Reporting

• Write reports and share information about your work with other people, including leaders and the public.
• Create presentations that explain your ideas and why they are important for the community’s health.
• Attend meetings and talk about your work to help everyone understand what’s happening with public health policies.

5. Checking How Policies Are Working

• Keep track of how well the health policies are doing.
• Look at health data to see if the policies are making a positive difference.
• Suggest ways to improve policies based on what you see.

Qualifications

To do this job well, you will need a mix of skills and experience. Here are the qualifications we are looking for:

Required Skills

• Good at Understanding Health Data: You should be able to read and understand information about people’s health. This will help you make smart decisions.
• Good Communication: You should be able to explain ideas clearly, both in writing and when speaking. You will talk to many different people, so it’s important to share your ideas simply and clearly.
• Teamwork: You will work with other people, so it’s important to know how to cooperate and share ideas.
• Problem-Solving Skills: You will need to find solutions to health problems, so you should be creative and think outside the box.
• Knowledge of Health Issues: You should know about health problems in your community, like diseases or poor access to healthcare.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Policies: It would be helpful if you have worked on creating or analyzing policies before, especially in healthcare or public health.
• Project Management: You might have to manage different projects at the same time. If you have experience doing that, it’s a plus.
• Experience Working with Communities: If you have experience talking to community members or helping out with community projects, that would be great.
• Speaking More Than One Language: If you speak more than one language, especially Spanish, it will help you talk to more people in San Diego County.

Education and Experience

Education

• A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Political Science, Health Administration, or a related subject is required.
• A Master’s degree in Public Health or Public Policy is great but not required.

Experience

• At least 2 years of experience working in health or public policy is preferred.
• If you have worked with government organizations or healthcare providers before, that is helpful.
• Experience with policy analysis or program management is a plus.
