Job Summary
As a Policy and Advocacy Specialist, your job will be to help make rules (called “policies”) that improve people’s health. You will also speak up for the things that people need in order to be healthier. This could mean talking to government leaders, helping create better health rules, or working with local organizations.
You will also need to research and learn about how different rules affect people’s health. Then, you’ll help make sure the right decisions are being made to help everyone stay healthy.
Responsibilities
As a Policy and Advocacy Specialist, you will have a lot of different tasks, such as:
- Researching Policies: You will look up information about health rules and how they impact people’s lives.
- Speaking Up for Health Needs: You will talk to important people, like government workers or community leaders, to make sure they understand what needs to be done to improve health.
- Making Suggestions: After looking at health rules, you will suggest changes that will make people’s lives better.
- Working with Others: You will work with many different groups, like local organizations, doctors, and community leaders, to make health a priority.
- Writing Reports: You will write simple and clear reports to explain your ideas and help others understand why changes need to be made.
- Helping at Events: You might organize meetings, workshops, or community events to talk about health issues and how to fix them.
Qualifications
To be a Policy and Advocacy Specialist, here is what we are looking for:
Required Skills
- Good Communication: You must be able to talk and write clearly so everyone understands what you are saying.
- Research Skills: You should be able to look up important information and find answers to questions about health.
- Problem-Solving: You should be good at finding solutions when there are problems or challenges in health care.
- Teamwork: You will work with different people, so you need to be a good team player.
- Understanding of Health: You should know a lot about health issues and how they affect people in your community.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Government: If you have worked with government agencies or understand how they make decisions, that will help you in this role.
- Health Law Knowledge: If you know about health laws and rules, that’s a big plus!
- Event Planning: If you have helped organize events before, it will help in this job.
- Speaking More Than One Language: If you speak more than one language, that will help you communicate with more people.
Education and Experience
We are looking for candidates who have:
- Education: A high school diploma or bachelor’s degree is required. If you have a degree in health, politics, or a similar subject, that’s great!
- Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience working on health-related projects or advocacy is needed. It’s also helpful if you have worked with the community or government before.
- Certifications: Any extra training or certifications in public health or advocacy would be helpful, but not required.
