Job Summary
The Peer Support Specialist plays a key role in supporting people who are facing mental health or substance use challenges. In this role, you will use your personal experiences to inspire hope, build trust, and help others feel understood. Responsibilities
As a Peer Support Specialist, your responsibilities will include:
Offering Support
- Share your recovery journey to offer comfort and connection
- Listen actively and provide emotional support
- Help reduce stigma by showing that recovery is possible
Group Facilitation and Outreach
- Lead or co-lead peer support groups
- Participate in community outreach to connect individuals with services
- Promote peer-led recovery and wellness activities
Individual Recovery Assistance
- Help individuals create personal recovery and wellness plans
- Guide people to mental health, substance use, housing, and job training resources
- Provide follow-up support to ensure continued progress
Administrative Support
- Maintain accurate notes on services provided and progress made
- Respect and protect clients’ privacy at all times
- Collaborate with clinical staff and other team members

Required Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you should have:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges
- Ability to communicate clearly and listen with empathy
- Passion for helping others and encouraging recovery
- Willingness to share your personal experiences in a supportive and respectful way
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working or volunteering in a peer support or mental health services role
- Familiarity with local resources in San Diego County
- Ability to remain calm during crises and help others manage difficult situations
- Understanding of cultural diversity and inclusion
- Bilingual skills (especially Spanish) are a plus
Education and Experience
- Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent
- Personal experience in recovery (required)
- Additional training in mental health, peer counseling, or recovery coaching is a plus
