In this role, you will work with pregnant women and new mothers who need help with their emotions. You will help them feel better by listening to their problems, talking with them, and helping them find ways to feel happy and healthy during and after their pregnancy.
Job Summary
As a Maternal Mental Health Counselor, your job will be to help women who are feeling sad, stressed, or anxious during pregnancy or after having a baby. Many new moms experience a lot of emotions, and your job is to give them the support and care they need. You will listen to them, talk about their feelings, and help them find ways to feel better. This is a very important job because it helps mothers take care of their mental health so they can also take care of their babies.
Responsibilities
As a Maternal Mental Health Counselor, your daily work will include:
- Talking to Moms: You will meet with pregnant women and new mothers to talk about their feelings and help them deal with emotions like sadness or stress.
- Helping Moms Feel Better: You will teach moms ways to feel better, like giving them advice or showing them how to relax and manage their emotions.
- Making a Plan: After talking with the mothers, you will work with them to make a plan to help them feel better. You might also suggest activities or exercises to help them cope with their emotions.
- Connecting Moms to Resources: Sometimes, moms need extra help. You will connect them with other services like support groups or doctors who can help.
- Being There in Emergencies: Sometimes, a mom might need help quickly. You will be ready to help in case of an emergency or if the mom needs urgent support.
- Working with Other Helpers: You won’t be working alone! You will team up with doctors, nurses, and social workers to make sure the mom gets all the help she needs.
- Writing Notes: After helping each mom, you will write down what happened in their visit. This is important to make sure you remember how you helped and how to keep track of their progress.

Qualifications
To be a Maternal Mental Health Counselor, you need to have some skills and experience:
Required Skills
- Helping Others: You need to have experience working with people and helping them with their feelings. You should have at least 2 years of experience in helping people with their mental health.
- Understanding Emotions: You should know how pregnancy and having a baby can make people feel upset or anxious. You should understand how to help them feel better.
- Talking and Listening: You need to be a good listener and know how to talk to people about their feelings in a way that helps them feel comfortable.
- Respecting Differences: You will work with people from many different backgrounds. You should be respectful of their culture, language, and experiences.
- Problem Solving: Sometimes, things won’t be easy. You need to think of creative ways to help moms feel better.
Preferred Skills
- Special Training: If you have special training in helping pregnant women or new mothers with their feelings, that’s a big plus!
- Bilingual: It would be helpful if you can speak both English and Spanish. Many people in San Diego speak both languages, and it will help you talk to more families.
- Experience with Crises: If you have experience helping people in emergencies, that’s great! Some moms may need immediate help.
Education and Experience
- Education: You need to have a master’s degree in counseling, social work, or psychology.
- Licensing: You must be licensed to practice counseling or therapy. This could be as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or a similar license.
- Experience: You should have at least 2 years of experience working in mental health, especially helping moms or families.
