Job Summary
As a Health Information Technician, you’ll help manage and keep track of important health records. These records are used by doctors and nurses to give the best care to patients. You will make sure all records are correct and that they stay private and safe.
Key Responsibilities
Here’s what you’ll do as a Health Information Technician:
1. Keep Health Records Organized
- Enter patient information into the computer system accurately.
- Update records with new information, so everything is correct.
- Sort and label records to make it easy for doctors and nurses to find what they need.
2. Protect Patient Privacy
- Keep patient information safe by following privacy rules.
- Make sure only the right people can see health records.
- Learn and use best practices to protect private information.
3. Check Data for Accuracy
- Regularly check records to make sure they are complete and correct.
- Fix any mistakes you find to keep the data accurate.
- Let your supervisor know if you see any major problems.
4. Work With Healthcare Staff
- Talk to doctors and nurses to help them find the information they need.
- Respond to requests for patient data from healthcare workers.
- Ensure all information flows smoothly, so patient care is fast and accurate.
5. Follow Health Rules
- Learn and follow rules about health information, like HIPAA (a law that protects patient information).
- Stay updated on changes to these rules.
- Attend training sessions about new health information rules.
Qualifications
Required Skills
To do this job well, you should have these skills:
- Attention to Detail: Double-check your work to make sure all information is correct.
- Organization Skills: Keep files and data well-organized.
- Basic Computer Skills: Be able to enter data into electronic health records.
- Understanding of Basic Medical Words: Know common medical terms so you understand the data you work with.
- Good Communication: Work well with other team members.
- Honesty and Responsibility: Be careful with private information.
Preferred Skills
It’s helpful if you also have these skills, though they’re not required:
- Knowledge of Health Systems: Familiarity with systems like EPIC or Cerner.
- Understanding of Privacy Rules: Know health privacy rules, like HIPAA.
- Problem Solving: Be able to spot and solve problems.
- Time Management: Manage your time and work on multiple tasks.
Education and Experience
To apply for this job, you should have:
- High School Diploma or GED: This is the minimum education requirement.
- Health Information Certificate: Helpful, but not required.
- Experience: At least one year of experience in data entry or record-keeping is a plus.
If you know some medical words and have experience with health information, that’s a big advantage!
