Job Summary
As an Environmental Health Specialist, you will help keep our community safe by looking for things that might cause health problems, like pollution or unsafe practices. You’ll check places like schools, restaurants, and other buildings to make sure they are following health rules. If you find anything dangerous, you’ll help fix it before anyone gets hurt.
You will also teach people how to stay safe and healthy, and help businesses follow rules that protect the environment. This job is important because it helps make sure everyone in Harris County has a clean and safe place to live.
Responsibilities
As an Environmental Health Specialist, here are some of the things you will do every day:
1. Inspect Places for Health Hazards:
- You’ll visit places like restaurants, schools, and parks to check if they are safe and clean.
- You’ll look for things like water pollution, bad air, or unsafe waste disposal.
2. Help Solve Health Problems:
- If you find something that could cause a health problem, you’ll help find ways to fix it.
- You might suggest changes to keep things clean and safe.
3. Teach the Community:
- You’ll talk to people and teach them about keeping their homes and businesses clean.
- You’ll help them understand how to avoid problems like pollution or pests.
4. Write Reports:
- After checking places, you’ll write reports to explain what you found and what should be done to fix any problems.
- You will keep records of your inspections and actions.
5. Work with Others:
- You will talk to other groups like local health departments and businesses to help make sure everyone is following the right rules.
6. Help During Emergencies:
- Sometimes, there might be emergencies like a natural disaster or an outbreak of illness. You will help by making sure the environment is safe and clean.
Qualifications
To do this job well, we’re looking for someone who cares about people’s health and has good communication skills.
Required Skills:
- Attention to Detail: You need to notice small problems that might affect people’s health.
- Problem-Solving: You’ll need to find ways to fix health problems when you see them.
- Communication Skills: You must be able to talk clearly and explain things to people.
- Organized: You’ll need to keep good records and be able to manage your time well.
- Knowledge of Health Rules: You should know how to keep places clean and safe, but we can teach you more if needed.
- Teamwork: You’ll work with other people to solve health problems.
Preferred Skills:
- Technology: It’s helpful to know how to use a computer to write reports and keep records.
- Public Speaking: If you’re good at speaking to groups, that’s a plus!
- Crisis Management: If you have experience handling emergency situations, that’s great.
- Bilingual: If you speak another language, like Spanish, it’s a plus because Houston has a lot of different communities.
Education and Experience
Education:
- You need to have a high school diploma or GED.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in something like Environmental Science, Public Health, or another similar subject is helpful but not required.
Experience:
- Experience in public health or environmental work is helpful, but not required. If you don’t have experience, we can train you.
Location: Harris County, Houston, Texas
