Job Summary
As a Biostatistician, your job is to help us look at health data, like numbers about diseases, hospitals, and vaccines. You’ll figure out what the numbers mean and help other people use that information to make health programs better.
You will work with other team members to analyze the data, find out what it tells us, and explain it in a simple way that everyone can understand. This job is important because it helps improve health programs that save lives and help people stay safe.
Responsibilities
As a Biostatistician, here are the things you will do:
- Analyze Health Data: You will look at numbers from surveys, research studies, and health reports to find out what’s happening with people’s health in the community.
- Create Research Plans: You’ll help make plans for how to collect and study health information. This helps us learn more about how diseases spread and how to prevent them.
- Write Reports: After you analyze the data, you will write reports and make presentations to share what you learned. You will explain the findings in a way that people can understand and use.
- Work with a Team: You will work with doctors, nurses, and other experts to share your findings and help improve health programs.
- Predict Health Outcomes: You will use data to guess what might happen next. For example, if we know how many people get sick with the flu, you will help us predict how many might get sick in the future.
- Check Data for Accuracy: You will make sure that the data we use is correct and reliable so we can make good decisions.
- Train Others: Sometimes, you will teach others in your team how to understand and use the data correctly.
- Stay Up-to-Date: You will learn new ways to look at data and improve your skills to help our team do the best job possible.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
To do well in this job, you should have these skills:
- Good with Numbers: You need to be comfortable working with numbers and using math to solve problems.
- Detail-Oriented: You should be careful and pay attention to small details to make sure the data is accurate.
- Problem Solver: You’ll need to think of creative solutions to health problems and come up with ideas for how to improve health programs.
- Clear Communicator: You will need to explain your findings to people who may not be experts. This means you need to be able to talk and write clearly.
- Team Player: You should enjoy working with others and be able to collaborate with doctors, scientists, and other experts.
- Honest and Responsible: You will be working with important health data, so you need to be trustworthy and responsible.
Preferred Skills:
These skills are not required but would be helpful:
- Experience with Health Data: It would be great if you’ve worked with health data before or understand things like disease patterns or health surveys.
- Knowledge of Health Policies: If you know about health laws or rules that affect communities, that will help you do your job better.
- Project Management: If you’ve ever worked on a project where you had to keep track of many tasks and deadlines, that experience will be useful.
- Advanced Data Skills: If you know how to use computers to analyze data in advanced ways, like using special programs or apps, that’s a bonus.
- Speaking Other Languages: If you speak another language, like Spanish, that can help you work with a wider variety of people in our community.
Education and Experience
Education:
- You need to have a Bachelor’s degree in Biostatistics, Public Health, Math, or a similar field.
- A Master’s degree is a plus, but not required.
Experience:
- It’s helpful if you have 1-3 years of experience working with data in a health or science-related job.
- If you don’t have a lot of experience, don’t worry! If you have a good education or have done internships, we still want to hear from you.
