Job Summary
As a Maternal and Child Health Specialist, your main job will be to help moms and kids get the care and support they need. You will teach families how to stay healthy during pregnancy, after childbirth, and when their babies are growing up. You will also work with doctors, nurses, and other health workers to make sure moms and kids are getting the right help.
In this role, you will also gather information about the health of families in the community, look at health trends, and work on new ways to help improve health. Your work will help create health programs and services that focus on keeping families safe and healthy.
Responsibilities
In your job as a Maternal and Child Health Specialist, your daily tasks will include:
- Teaching families about health: You will talk to moms, dads, and families about how to stay healthy during pregnancy, how to take care of babies, and how to eat healthy foods. You will teach them about things like vaccines, nutrition, and the importance of regular doctor visits.
- Helping create health programs: You will help make programs that teach families how to stay healthy and make sure moms and kids get the care they need.
- Collecting health information: You will gather information about the health of moms and kids in the area to understand what needs to be improved.
- Working with doctors and nurses: You will work closely with healthcare workers to make sure moms and kids get the care they need. This may include helping families find doctors or getting follow-up care after a visit.
- Tracking how well health programs work: You will check if the health programs are working and if they are helping families. If something isn’t working, you’ll help fix it.
- Talking to the community: You will work with local groups to spread the word about health programs and teach families how to stay healthy.
- Supporting families: You may also talk to families directly to offer advice and support, especially those who are struggling with their health.
Qualifications
Skills You Need
To do well in this job, you should have:
- Good communication skills: You should be able to explain health topics in a way that everyone can understand. You will talk to people who may not know a lot about health, so it’s important to explain things clearly.
- Kindness and caring: You need to care about helping others. Being kind and understanding will help you work well with families.
- Problem-solving skills: Sometimes, you will need to find ways to fix problems or help families with challenges. It’s important to think creatively and find solutions.
- Organization skills: You will have a lot of tasks to manage, so being able to keep things organized and on track is important.
- Respect for all cultures: San Diego County has people from many different cultures. You need to be respectful and understand that everyone has different ways of doing things.
- Teamwork: You will work with other health workers and community groups. Being a good team player is important to help everyone work together for the same goal.
Bonus Skills
While these are not required, it’s helpful if you also have:
- Ability to speak more than one language: If you can speak Spanish, it will help you communicate with more families in the community.
- Experience in public health: If you have worked in health programs before, that would be great!
- Grant writing skills: If you know how to apply for funding (like grants), that would be a helpful skill for the job.
Education and Experience
- Education: You need at least a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nursing, Social Work, or something similar. If you have a Master’s degree in Public Health, that’s even better, but not required.
- Experience: It’s great if you have 2 years of experience in health programs or working with families. If you have worked with mothers or children before, that’s a plus!
